CUNHA 7TH GRADERS VISIT TIDE POOLS

marine

CEF funding allowed every Cunha 7th grader to have the opportunity to attend a field trip to the tide pools at the Fitzgerald Marine Reserve in Moss Beach during the month of February.

The 233 students observed a variety of marine life that included everything from seals to cephalopods, snails, muscles, worms, sponges, cnidarians, echinoderms and a diverse range of algae. The observations were helpful in allowing the students to make connections with the 7th grade life science curriculum.

Students, led by trained docents and accompanied by Cunha science teachers and parent chaperones, participated in hands-on, real-world activities and experienced a safe and positive tide pool/marine learning environment.

Marcelo Ugalde, Cunha 7th grader, reflected, "I really liked that there were so many different living things to see in the tidepools, like jellyfish (mulitple!), anenomes and sea stars."

"Thank you again for funding this request and providing our students with a memorable experience," said Mr. Jeff Centoni, Cunha Science Teacher. "Your support of Cunha and our student learning is highly valued and certainly appreciated."

CEF proudly supports science at all district schools, investing over $70,000 during 2014/2015 school year. In addition to this field trip, CEF funded salaries for 4th and 5th grade science specialists, purchased state-of-the-art high school laboratory equipment, and sent middle and high school science teachers to the National Science Teachers Association conference. Together, we are making a difference in science education!
