A Farallone View first grader donned her hot pink headphones and powered up the interactive reading software program, Raz-Kids, on her laptop. “I like the different levels on Raz-Kids. If you get to Level 1, you are past first grade. I’m on Level 5,” she grinned.

Raz-Kids delivers hundreds of interactive, leveled eBooks spanning 27 reading levels. The web-based site provides over 400 books and open book eQuizzes, with new books added every month.

“Raz-Kids is fantastic because it allows kids at different levels to access and enjoy materials,” explained classroom teacher, Jennifer Scarpaci. “It tracks text so the kids can record themselves reading and sends the information to us so we can hear them reading. It’s super engaging.”

Last year, CEF provided over $24,000 in funds to purchase Raz-Kids as well as other high quality informational texts and reading software programs for all of our public elementary schools. In addition, CEF is co-leading The Big Lift, an effort to enhance reading proficiency in our Coastside schools beginning with preschool and aligning with the K-3 curriculum. Thanks to the continued generosity of our donors, CEF has been able to commit to improving literacy and giving access to reading materials for Cabrillo Unified School District students.

On April 26, the CEF Board of Directors came together at beautiful Elkus Ranch for a productive and energizing retreat. We celebrated our successes - helping CUSD win the Big Lift grant, our growing endowment and our continued commitment to the best public education possible for our Coastside kids. CEF is led by a volunteer Board of Directors comprised of corporate and community leaders who donate their time and talent to helping fund the quality education Cabrillo Unifed School District students deserve.
